ALWAGHT- The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson criticized recent US threats toward Venezuela, calling Washington’s military activities in Latin America a risky move that threatens regional peace and security.
At a weekly press conference, Iran’s Esmaeil Baghaei criticized the rise of unilateral actions on the global stage, emphasizing that the fundamental principles of international law—prohibiting the use of force and respecting state sovereignty—are being violated in Latin America under the guise of combating drug trafficking. He described US military movements in the region as a serious threat to peace and stability.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro accused the US of fabricating a pretext for war, pointing to the deployment of the world’s largest warship and escalating military presence as part of a potential attempt to overthrow his government. US President Donald Trump has accused Maduro of leading a criminal gang and authorized CIA operations, even considering ground attacks on alleged drug cartels, though no evidence has been presented to support these claims.
Since early September, US forces have attacked at least 10 boats involved in alleged drug trafficking, resulting in 43 deaths. International law experts and UN officials have condemned these strikes as extrajudicial killings in violation of both US and international law. Despite framing the operations as anti-drug measures, Caracas maintains that the deployments of warships, F-35 jets, and a nuclear-powered submarine are masking a broader plan to undermine the Venezuelan government.
