ALWAGHT- Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman criticized the US for imposing 'cheap' restrictions on Iranian diplomats in New York, calling the measures a form of systematic harassment and proof of Washington’s hostility toward Iranians.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei denounced the Trump administration’s decision to impose strict restrictions on Iranian diplomats in New York, including limitations on basic daily activities and the denial of visas to members of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s media team for the UN General Assembly. He argued the curbs were designed to obstruct Iran’s diplomatic performance during the high-profile gathering.
Baghaei condemned the measures as a “blatant violation” of US obligations under the 1947 UN Headquarters Agreement, calling them systematic harassment and a reflection of Washington’s hostility toward Iranians. He stressed that the restrictions even targeted diplomats’ daily necessities such as grocery shopping, representing a new low in US treatment of Iranian envoys.
The controversy unfolded as President Pezeshkian prepared to address the 80th UNGA amid rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and renewed sanctions threats following a 12-day war in June. That conflict, triggered by Israeli attacks and escalated by unlawful US strikes on nuclear facilities, left more than 1,000 Iranians dead before Tehran’s retaliatory operations forced a ceasefire.
