ALWAGHT- The Iranian president rejected the presence of any foreign military forces in a new transport corridor proposed under a US-brokered agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, warning that the US could use economic investment as a cover to advance hegemonic ambitions in the Caucasus.
In a phone call with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian praised the strong and strategic ties between Iran and Armenia, based on mutual respect and neighborliness. He condemned any efforts to undermine these long-standing relations and expressed Iran’s support for agreements that promote peace and stability in the region.
Pezeshkian raised concerns about a US-brokered corridor linking Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan through southern Armenia, warning that foreign military involvement should be avoided to preserve Armenia’s sovereignty. He cautioned that the US might use this economic project to further hegemonic aims in the Caucasus under the pretense of fostering peace and development.
Pashinyan detailed Armenia’s peace treaty process with Azerbaijan and emphasized that no agreement would be signed without considering Iran’s interests and concerns. He highlighted the strategic importance of Armenia-Iran relations, promising that all major decisions will involve coordination and transparency with Tehran to ensure mutual trust and cooperation.
