ALWAGHT- As Palestinians gathered to receive food aid in Gaza, Israeli troops opened fire, killing at least 20, say authorities. The incident highlights growing criticism over a chaotic and deadly aid distribution process.
Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians gathering for aid in central Gaza on Tuesday, killing at least 20 and wounding over 120, according to witnesses and local authorities. The attack targeted a distribution site run by the Israeli and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Hours earlier, 14 Palestinians were killed at another GHF site in Rafah. Since late May, more than 110 people have been killed and over 1,000 injured while seeking food under the GHF’s controversial aid system.
The Israeli military claimed it fired warning shots at individuals approaching troops, but this latest incident follows a pattern of deadly attacks on civilians awaiting aid. Earlier this month, 31 Palestinians were killed in a similar incident. The violence comes amid Israel’s renewed military campaign in Gaza, which has killed thousands since breaking a ceasefire in March. Since October 2023, the offensive has claimed over 54,927 Palestinian lives—mostly women and children—and injured 126,615.
Israel faces mounting international condemnation, with the ICC issuing arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes. The country is also defending itself against genocide charges at the ICJ over its devastating war on Gaza, which has left the besieged territory in humanitarian crisis.
