Iran Criticizes New US Sanctions as Undermining Negotiations

ALWAGHT- Iran denounces latest US sanctions as 'illegal', accusing Washington of hypocrisy in professed desire for dialogue.

The US Treasury imposed new sanctions on Tuesday targeting Iranian businessman Seyed Asadollah Emamjomeh and his company for involvement in Iran’s oil and gas exports. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the move, calling it proof of Washington’s "lack of goodwill" ahead of scheduled indirect talks between the two nations. He accused the US of violating international law and human rights, stating that such sanctions amount to "crimes against humanity" by restricting Iran’s development.

Baghaei emphasized that unilateral sanctions defy UN Charter principles and demanded accountability for their humanitarian consequences. This marks the seventh round of US sanctions since February, maintaining pressure despite ongoing nuclear negotiations. The talks, held in Muscat and Rome, aim to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear program but face tensions due to continued US sanctions.

Technical discussions between Iranian and American experts began Wednesday in Rome, paving the way for high-level talks on Saturday in Muscat. The repeated sanctions underscore the challenges in diplomacy, as Tehran insists Washington’s actions contradict its claims of seeking a negotiated solution. The outcome of the upcoming meeting could determine whether progress is possible amid persistent economic pressure.
