ALWAGHT- Denmark has dismissed US President Donald Trump's remarks about acquiring Greenland as his administration intensifies its expansionist rhetoric.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen firmly stated on Friday that Greenland is "not for sale" after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested President Trump is serious about acquiring the island.
Rasmussen emphasized, "It is not a joke when we say that, of course, Greenland should not become American." He further clarified that both the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland have no interest in such a move.
Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede expressed similar sentiments ahead of Trump’s inauguration, saying, “We do not want to be Danes. We do not want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.” Rubio, however, insisted that Trump's interest in purchasing Greenland is not a joke, arguing that it aligns with US national interests. He pointed to concerns about China potentially gaining influence over the island in the future, suggesting China could use Greenland for military purposes. In response, Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu rejected these claims, calling them "totally groundless and unfounded."
