Departing US Administration Announces $8 Billion Arms Deal with Israel

ALWAGHT- The outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden is reportedly set to propose an $8 billion arms deal to Israel, reinforcing Washington’s steadfast support for the occupying regime's destructive actions in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The US State Department has reportedly informed Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms deal with Israel, which includes munitions for fighter jets, attack helicopters, artillery shells, small-diameter bombs, and warheads. This deal is intended to replenish Israel's stockpiles of critical munitions and air defense capabilities, reinforcing the Biden administration's stance on supporting Israel's long-term security. The deal is also seen as part of Washington's response to perceived threats from Iran and its proxies.

This arms deal is expected to be the last weapons sale that President Biden approves for Israel before his term ends. Earlier, the Biden administration approved a $20 billion arms package for Israel, despite global calls for an arms embargo due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Since Israel launched its military offensive on Gaza in October 2023, following Hamas' Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, the conflict has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with over 45,000 Palestinians killed and tens of thousands more injured or missing.

The US has consistently used its veto power at the UN Security Council to block ceasefire resolutions in Gaza, further cementing its role as Israel's key ally. Amidst this, Israel faces ongoing international legal challenges, including arrest warrants for its leaders from the International Criminal Court over war crimes in Gaza and a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
