ALWAGHT- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei honored the late commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, describing him as a remarkable hero who captured the hearts of ordinary people.
On Thursday, Esmaeil Baghaei, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, marked the fifth anniversary of General Qassem Soleimani's martyrdom in a post on his X account. General Soleimani was assassinated in a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020.
Baghaei highlighted that while modern warfare often depends on weapons and bombs, General Soleimani earned his legacy as the "commander of hearts." He noted that great leaders are remembered not for conquering lands but for winning the hearts of people, ensuring their achievements endure through time.
The spokesman also praised the late commander as a heroic figure in the fight against terrorism.
In January 2020, a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport targeted and martyred General Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy leader of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and several others. Soleimani was in Baghdad on an official visit when the attack occurred.
Both leaders were widely revered for their critical roles in defeating the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group, particularly in Iraq and Syria.
