ALWAGHT- The Palestinian Hamas resistance group has called on the UN and the global community to act as Palestinians succumb to harsh winter conditions in Gaza amid an ongoing Israeli assault on the besieged territory.
In a statement on Tuesday, Hamas called for "relief supplies and tents" to shield hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in Gaza from the cold and the "disastrous effects" of Israel's prolonged aggression. The group urged the international community and the UN to fulfill their "humanitarian and legal duty" by providing urgent relief to the people of Gaza, accusing Israel of genocide and ethnic cleansing.
The plea comes as winter exacerbates the suffering of a population devastated by Israel's ongoing offensive, which began on October 7, 2023, in response to a Hamas operation. At least seven Palestinians, including six infants, have died of hypothermia within two weeks. Israel’s assault has killed over 45,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 108,000 in Gaza.
The displaced Palestinians, many forced to relocate multiple times, are living in fragile cloth tents, many of which are waterlogged or submerged in floods. Videos from Gaza reveal tents drenched by rain or engulfed in floodwaters. Gaza's Government Media Office reported on Monday that 81 percent of the 135,000 tents are unusable and urgently require replacement.
The office warned that winter's harsh conditions, combined with the ongoing destruction and displacement, are worsening the humanitarian crisis. It emphasized the urgent need for immediate action to address the dire living conditions of Gaza's displaced population.
