Our Response to Meddling to Be Firm, Proportionate: Iran Warns Germany

Alwaght- Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian condemned German FM’s remarks in support of violent riots in Iran as meddling in the country’s domestic affairs, warning that Tehran will give a “proportionate and firm” response to such interventionist positions.

“Provocative, interventionist and undiplomatic stances don’t signal sophistication and wisdom," Amir-Abdollahian said in a tweet addressed to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Thursday.

He warned that undermining old ties between the two countries has long-term consequences, and added that Germany can choose between engagement to address shared challenges or pursue confrontation.

On Wednesday, Baerbock voiced support for the recent riots across Iran, saying the European Union will seek to adopt new sanctions against Tehran next week.

The riots broke out in Iran in mid-September after the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old fainted at a police station in Tehran and was pronounced dead three days later in hospital.

Rioters went on rampage across the country, brutally attacking security officers and causing massive damage to public property as Western powers, especially the United States, provided support.

An official report by Iran’s forensic authority concluded that Amini’s death was caused by illness rather than alleged blows to the head or other vital body organs.

The European countries slapped a set of sanctions on Iran over the country’s handling of the violence.

Iran, in turn, announced tit-for-tat sanctions against institutions and individuals in the European Union due to their deliberate actions in support of terrorism and terrorist groups.
