Alwaght- Syria's air defenses have confronted an Israeli attack on Latakia, the biggest port city in the Arab country, which lies in its northwest, reported state media.
The attack came on early Tuesday, reported Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The attack damaged facades of a hospital, some residential buildings and shops, local sources said.
The attack is the second one in December. The last one was launched on December 7.
It is not clear yet whether the attack resulted in any human losses, but the report said "a large number of containers" resting in the port caught fire as a result of the strike, reported Iran's Press TV.
The attacks on Latakia have represented a new chapter in the Israeli air raids on the war-weary Arab country. Until December they mainly targeted Damascus outskirts.
"The Israeli aggression caused big materialistic damages and assessing its results is still a work in progress", the Syrian defence ministry said in a statement.
Live footage aired by the Syrian State TV showed flames and smoke in the containers area.
"Fire fighters are trying to put the fires off while ambulances arrived at the scene," the state TV reporter said.
Latakia, a Mediterranean port, is Syria's main commercial port.
The port city is home to Russian sea and air bases operated since the Soviet era. The bases have played a major role in advancing the Russian operations against a litany of Western, Arab, and Turkish-backed terrorist groups fighting the Syrian central government since 2011.
The attacks started to grow significantly in scale and frequency after 2011, when Syria found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed militancy and terrorism.
Tel Aviv claims that its attacks target alleged supplies that are headed for the Lebanese resistance movement of Hezbollah. On countless occasions, though, the strikes have targeted the reinforcement belonging to Syria’s military and its allies.
The Israelis have also been providing safe passage and medical treatment to the Takfiri terrorists.
