Pro-Independence Parties Win Spain's Catalan Elections

Monday 28 September 2015
Pro-Independence Parties Win Spain's Catalan Elections
Alwaght- Catalonia's pro-independence alliance last night pledged to continue with plans to declare unilateral independence from Spain, following success in a regional election in which they won a clear majority.
With 97 percent of the votes for the regional parliament counted, pro-independence parties took a total of 72 seats in the 135-seat regional parliament  - enough for the mandate they say they sought for secession.
To triumphant shouts of “Independence!”, Artur Mas, the Catalan regional president, hailed the win in front of supporters gathered in the Born neighborhood of the region's capital city, Barcelona. "We ask that the whole world recognizes the victory of Catalonia and the victory of the Yes!"
With Madrid and Barcelona  seemingly locked on a collision course, nobody knows quite what will happen next. The government has introduced a bill to suspend elected officials who disobey it, legislation clearly aimed at Mr Mas. Should they try to remove him, Roger Albinyana, the Catalan foreign affairs secretary told the reporters ahead of the vote, “the Catalan people will respond”.
Basque is another autonomous region in northern Spain that has previously called for a “legitimate and coherent” referendum on its future.
“They [the Spanish government] have a problem in Catalonia and they have a problem in the Basque Country,” Inigo Urkullu, President of the Basque government, said on Sunday.
Madrid has opposed the split with its autonomous region, which boasts the country’s highest GDP, due to economic reasons, as Spain has been suffering from a severe financial recession for years.
