Palestinian Presidency Reiterates Al-Quds Remains Capital of ‘Independent Palestinian State’

Palestinian Presidency Reiterates Al-Quds Remains Capital of ‘Independent Palestinian State’

Alwaght- The Palestinian president’s office warned Friday of the potential destructive effects of any move denying the right to Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of the future Palestinian state.

The statement comes as US President Donald Trump is due to decide by Monday on whether to move his country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Al-Quds.

Without referring to Trump or the US by name, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas’s spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said any just solution in the Middle East required recognition of “East al-Quds as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.”

“East al-Quds, with its holy places, is the beginning and the end of any solution and any project that saves the region from destruction,” he said in a statement on the official Wafa news agency.

Trump had vowed during his presidential campaign that he would relocate the US embassy in order to court pro-Israel voters. Former US Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama promised the same thing during their election campaigns, but later reversed their proposals.

Palestinians have repeatedly warned Trump against such an action, saying it would deliver a death blow to any prospects of the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and fuel extremism in the region.

Most of the world does not recognize al-Quds as Israeli regime's capital and the city is considered occupied territory.

The Israeli regime has attempted to change the demographic buildup of al-Quds over the past decades by constructing settlements, destroying historical sites and expelling the local Palestinian population.
