Alwaght- Camp David Summit among leaders of the US and Persian Gulf states in the next few days is of interests for many people, but the more important note is the story behind it; since the game rules have been changed. Now, what is of great importance is what is to be seen in the background.
First: pre-holding space
Barack Obama is expected to visit the leaders of Arabic countries emphasizing that the US seeks for keeping the security of Persian Gulf countries via establishing a common defense organization in the region. Accordingly, Reuters reported: “Obama is going to ensure the Persian Gulf countries that nuclear agreement on Iran nuclear program never threaten their security, as in early May he asked these countries to aid the US in issue of nuclear agreement with Iran”. In an interview with New York Times, Obama said: “different dangers threat the Arabian countries of Persian Gulf, but Iran is not a threat for them and the biggest danger is their own indoors conditions.”
Second: reasons behind the summit
In recent conditions, the relationship between Persian Gulf Arabian countries with the US is not desirable, while Iran’s influence in the region is increasing gradually having a direct effect on the policies of Persian Gulf countries. However, regarding to the reasons and result of this meeting, the following notes should be taken into consideration:
· The US strategy for ensuring the Persian Gulf countries stems from its weakness not its power. On the other hand, it does not mean that Arab states are powerful, but implies that the US influence in the region is not comprehensive. Arabic countries suffer from issues such as having no control in and influence over Syria and need agreements with the US to ensure their security. In addition, The US tries to maintain its own policies in the region to control the conditions.
· The role that US plays in the region may have other reasons such as failure of its strategic plans in the region and misunderstanding the real needs of the people of the region. Although the US has had some achievements in the region, it has never been able to establish them due to its excessive reliance on the Persian Gulf countries and arming them. The US has been able to penetrate in the Arabic countries of Persian Gulf during recent years, but it has failed to achieve its preset goals.
· Since the beginning of the Islamic Awakening, the region’s countries have boosted their efforts to survive. The US realized that the Persian Gulf countries are not able to resist against this popular movement. Therefore, fearing that this wave may topple its strategic allies, US spared no effort to deviate Islamic Awakening to them stay at power. Persian Gulf Arab states backed by US decided to spread the crisis into Syria via their terrorist proxies to deviate public opinion from their own countries. In addition they were trying to get rid of Syrian government that was a strong ally of Iran.
· When the Arabic countries failed in Syria, Washington decided to launch negotiations with Iranian which was a heavy blow for Arab states. Feeling that they are betrayed by their western Arabs became angry as the saw the US has set them aside and started negotiations with Iran on its nuclear program. Therefore, the US planned to hold the Camp David Summit both to ensure its allies that it has not betrayed them as well as to ink military cooperation agreement with them. Indeed the US aims at deepening its influence in Persian Gulf countries and gain upper hand in its nuclear talks with Iran.
