Alwaght- The US armed terrorist groups in Syria could eventually commit something similar to the 9/11 attacks on New York, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said on Friday.
Referring to the US plans to deliver shoulder fired missiles to terrorist groups in Syria, Mikhail Bogdanov said “this would be an be absolutely counterproductive approach because ultimately these people, which have been trained and armed by the Americans, will do the same thing that was done in New York on September 11 (2001)."
On 11 September 2001 al-Qaeda terrorists, mostly Saudi citizens, hit three hijacked passenger planes to the twin World Trade Center towers and the pentagon building killing a total of 3,000 people.
A US official was quoted last week by some media sources as saying that large numbers of man-portable missile systems (MANPADS) could be delivered to militants in Syria through Washington’s Western and regional allies, particularly Persian Gulf Arab states and Turkey.
"The Saudis have always thought that the way to get the Russians to back off is what worked in Afghanistan 30 years ago – negating their air power (in Syria) by giving MANPADS to the militants," Reuters quoted one of the US officials as saying.
Syrian army has confiscated large amounts of US-made ammunitions from terrorist groups in the northern Aleppo. In a video footage on PressTV, Syrian army showed US-made ammunitions delivered to the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham group, al-Qaeda's branch in Syria formerly known as al-Nusra Front.
Syrian government is fighting foreign backed terrorist groups since 2011 when they initiated a war to topple the legitimate president, Bashar Assad.
Aleppo has been divided between state and militant groups since 2012 and the Syrian army has launched a large-scale operation to liberate the city in recent days.
