Alwaght- Turkey's Opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli warned that a possible ground offensive on Syria in alliance with Saudi Arabia would lead to "unimaginably grave" consequences.
Responding to remarks by the country's Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Bahçeli said: "The government is of course required to protect national security and to take deterrent measures in the face of dangers emanating from outside our borders. But if a military operation is being planned in the name of executing or assisting some global projects and a cooperation is forged with Saudi Arabia to that effect, the results could be terrible. It could lead to unimaginably grave consequences," Turkey-based Tody's zaman website reported.
After the Syrian government and its allies are gains in the war against terrorism and succeeding where the US-led coalition has failed, Turkey and Saudi Arabia announced that they cannot put up with Syria's latest development.
Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu said Turkey could join a ground operation with Saudi Arabia in Syria and that Saudi Arabia is set to send warplanes to İncirlik air base in southern Turkey to be used for air missions. Riyadh is ready to send troops as well, he said.
"Turkey will not be a proxy to execute scenarios of violence and atrocity drafted in foreign capitals. Otherwise the outcome could be catastrophic," MHP leader said.
He also said the government must immediately inform the Parliament about all aspects of its relations with Saudi Arabia and offer detailed explanations about the current developments. "A ground operation without the approval of Parliament could cost us a homeland," he warned.
The Turkish army has shelled Syrian government forces on Saturday in Aleppo and Latakia provinces, while also hitting Kurdish targets near the city of Azaz in northwestern Syria, including an air base recently retaken from ISIS terrorists.
Anatolia news agency reported that the Turkish military hit Syrian government forces, adding that the shelling had been in response to fire inflicted on a Turkish military guard post in Turkey’s southern Hatay region.
Turkish artillery targeted Syrian forces again late on Saturday, according to a military source quoted by RIA Novosti. The attack targeted the town of Deir Jamal in the Aleppo Governorate.
The agency also cited details of an earlier attack on Syrian government army positions in northwestern Latakia.
