ALWAGHT- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi rejected the US and European troika’s attempt to reactivate UN sanctions through the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism, calling it baseless and illegal. He warned that this move damages UNSC Resolution 2231 and harms the credibility of the United Nations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sent a letter to his foreign counterparts rejecting the United States and three European countries’ attempt to reactivate terminated UN Security Council resolutions via the JCPOA snapback mechanism. He described the move as unlawful, baseless, and a threat to the UN’s authority and the credibility of multilateral diplomacy, emphasizing that it contradicts UNSC resolution 2231 and undermines the integrity of the Security Council.
Araghchi stated that the snapback procedure is invalid since the US withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 and the European countries have failed to fulfill their commitments. He argued that the notification and draft resolution submitted do not comply with resolution 2231’s requirements. He warned that attempts to revive terminated sanctions amounts to unilateral rewriting of international law, damaging trust in Security Council decisions and the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.
Iran firmly opposes these claims and will not recognize any reinstatement of sanctions, reaffirming that all restrictions under resolution 2231 expire on October 18, 2025. Araghchi called on other states to reject the snapback attempt, avoid incorporating it into their policies, and uphold multilateralism, warning that allowing such claims to succeed would gravely harm the UN’s authority and the principle of international law.
