ALWAGHT- Sergei Lavrov states that Russia supports the restoration of the original Iran deal approved by the UN Security Council.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow's support for reviving the original Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015. He highlighted that Russia has discussed the situation surrounding the deal with both the United States and European officials, emphasizing the importance of restoring the deal, which was abandoned by the US during the Trump administration.
Lavrov expressed Russia’s preference for resuming the original deal format, which was endorsed by the UN Security Council and Iran. He also commented on US attempts to create a new nuclear deal with Iran, linking it to political conditions, such as limiting Iran’s support for resistance groups in the Middle East. Lavrov dismissed this approach, stating it would not work and expressing concern over the US attaching political strings to the deal.
The 2015 JCPOA deal, known as the P5+1 agreement, was meant to address Iran’s nuclear program, but the US unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018 under President Trump, re-imposing sanctions on Tehran. Despite promises from European signatories to compensate for the economic damage caused by US sanctions, Iran began rolling back its nuclear commitments after a year of waiting for relief.
