Taliban Celebrate Defeating US-Led NATO in Afghanistan: Ex-CIA Chief

Taliban Celebrate Defeating US-Led NATO in Afghanistan: Ex-CIA Chief

Alwaght- Former acting CIA Director Michael Morell said Taliban are celebrating their success in defeating the US-led NATO in Afghanistan.

“The Taliban is saying, we just didn't defeat the United States, we defeated NATO. We defeated the world's greatest military power, ever. So there's a celebration going on,” said Morell, who served as acting CIA director twice between 2011 and 2013.

“I think that the Taliban winning the war in Afghanistan, and then the way our exit happened, has absolutely inspired jihadists all over the world,” Morell told CBS News on Sunday.

The former top US spy said a lot of other people must be going “to Afghanistan to be part of the celebration.”

“So after 9/11 they all scattered from Afghanistan. I think we're going to see a flow back in and that's one of the things that makes Afghanistan more dangerous than other spots on the planet,” he continued.

Morell’s comments come as the Taliban forms their government in Afghanistan after the US retreated from the country after twenty years of war that left hundreds of thousands of Afghans dead and millions more displaced.

The US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 and removed the Taliban from power. American forces occupied the country for about two decades on the pretext of fighting against the Taliban. But as the US forces left Afghanistan, the Taliban stormed into Kabul, weakened by continued foreign occupation.
