Hezbollah Demands End of the Waste Crisis ‘Charade’

Hezbollah Demands End of the Waste Crisis ‘Charade’
Alwaght- Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has called for the end of the Waste Crisis ‘Charade’ and demanded ‘reasonable solutions’ that address the transition phase ahead of reaching a long-term strategic plan.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Hezbollah reiterated the right of peaceful and reasonable protests. The statement published by Al Manar TV website pointed out that “just solutions would calm people down and pave the ground for actions in the people’s interest in this important issue.”

“The waste crisis clearly indicates who is responsible for it,” Hezbollah said, adding: “The extent of the popular demand of a solution all over Lebanon proves the magnitude of the environmental, social and moral disaster resulting from negligence by the successive governments.” The statement was referring to the weekend protests led by the ‘You Stink’ civil society campaign following the waste management crisis.

“The trash crisis is one part of the mounting and rampant corruption throughout the last two decades,” Hezbollah said. “We hoped that this sensitive issue would have been addressed positively, but unfortunately we were shocked by the scandal of the proposed bids of waste management tenders.”

Since the weekend, Lebanon has been plagued with the waste disposal crisis, with people bursting across the streets of the capital after being fed up with political corruption.
More than a hundred people were injured on Saturday, and dozens more sustained injuries in Sunday's clashes between Lebanese security forces and a large number of people protesting against the ongoing garbage crisis in the capital, Beirut. Demonstrations were also held on Tuesday.
Beirut’s main landfill has been closed down, leaving the city and its suburbs covered in trash with the stench of rotted garbage filling the streets, prompting the country’s Health Ministry to warn that the country will be on the brink of a “major health disaster” if the problem is not resolved rapidly.
