Four Iranian Border Guards Killed as Pakistan-Based Militants Attack Outpost

Alwaght- Four Iranian border guard forces were killed on Tuesday when Pakistan-based militants attacked a security watchtower on the frontier with Pakistan.

According to Iran's ISNA news agency,  the forces were also injured after the terrorist team from inside Pakistan attacked the watchtower belonging to the Iranian Border Guard at 01:00 a.m. that lasted to 3:00 a.m. local time in the town of Mirjaveh in the southeastern province of Sistan-and-Baluchestan.

A border guard force, a soldier and two Basiji (volunteer) forces were killed in the ambush on the border post in the city of Mirjaveh.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that three terrorists were also killed in the cross-border attack.

Over the past years, Iranian border guards have repeatedly come under attack by terror groups active on Pakistani soil. Several terror activities have been thwarted near the border with Pakistan, while many terrorists have been arrested.

Security forces also frequently clash with drug traffickers in the province, which lies on a major smuggling route for Afghan opium and heroin.

In May 2017, 10 Iranian border guards were killed in clashes with terrorists near the town of Mirjaveh. Three more were also injured in the attack claimed by the so-called Jaish ul-Adl terror group.

Iran’s Defense Ministry subsequently pressed Islamabad to do more to secure the common border, and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif travelled to the South Asian country to ensure enhanced security cooperation between the two sides.
