Indian, Pakistani Troops Exchange Fire in Disputed Kashmir

Troops patrol along the Kashmir Line of Control (LoC)

The armies of India and Pakistan exchanged fire and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed Kashmir region

Alwaght- The armies of India and Pakistan exchanged fire and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed Kashmir region, an official said Friday.

The two sides exchanged fire on LoC in Kamalkote sector of frontier Uri town, about 117 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Reports said the firing started during night and was going on until last reports poured in.

Indian army officials said their side was effectively retaliating to the firing from Pakistan.

Officials said, so far no reports of damage or casualty were received from Indian or Pakistani side.

Last year, a total of 820 incidents of cease-fire violations were reported in Kashmir.

The skirmishes led to killings of troops as well as civilians on both sides.

Both New Delhi and Islamabad accuse each other of resorting to unprovoked firings and violating cease-fire agreements. And both sides maintain that their troops gave befitting reply.

The troops of India and Pakistan intermittently exchange fire on 720-km LoC and 198-km International Border (IB) in Kashmir, despite an agreement in 2003 to observe a cease-fire.

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan-controlled parts.

Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided since the partition of British colonial India into the dominion states of India and Pakistan in 1947. China also holds a small parcel of Kashmir's land.

The conflict in Indian-controlled Kashmir is basically a struggle for self-determination with residents of the region demanding a plebiscite while India rejects the call.
