Alwaght- Iran has unveiled a powerful ballistic missile during the annual Sacred Defense Week military parade in Tehran.
The missile, named Khorramshahr, was unveiled during a massive military held at mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, south of the city. The parade was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and high ranking military commanders including Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri.
The ballistic missile, which has a range of 2,000 kilometers, is capable of carrying multiple warheads, said Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Division. The missile has been named after the Iranian port city of Khorramshahr which was occupied by Iraqi aggressors and liberated on 24 May 1982 after a fierce battle.
Various units representing the Iranian Navy, Air Force, Army Ground Force, Airborne division, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Police participated in the parades.
Simultaneously, a large-scale military parade was also held in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, involving a range of naval watercraft.
The most recent achievements of the Iranian armed forces in missile industry, equipment for the ground, naval and air defense forces as well as communication gear were put on display in the military events.
Addressing the event, Rouhani said no country can stop the Islamic Republic from strengthening its missile capabilities and defense programs.
“We will promote our defensive and military power as much as we deem necessary,” Rouhani said. “We seek no one’s permission to defend our land.”
He added that Iran’s defense power has never been used for aggressive acts, while certain world powers export deadly weapons to the West Asia region.
The Iranian president said Tehran is playing key role in restoring peace and stability to the region.
“The great nation of Iran has always pursued peace and security in the region and the world, and has always defended the oppressed people of the world. We will defend the downtrodden people of Yemen, Syria, and Palestine whether you like it or not,” he added.
In Iran, the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war is known as the Sacred Defense, and the Sacred Defense Week is held on the anniversary of the beginning of the imposed war.
