Alwaght- Iranian foreign minister called on the newly-elected US president to stay committed to international agreements including the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known commonly as the Iran deal or Iran nuclear deal.
During a press conference in Romania, Mohammad Javad Zarif said “the US president should understand the real meaning of today's world and try to go in harmony with international developments”.
Iranian foreign minister who is on a trip to Romania, told a group of reports that US is duty-bound to stay committed to JCPOA.
The JCPOA was inked between Tehran and the P5+1 group of world powers, namely Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany on July 14, 2015.
In a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart Lazar Comanescu after their meeting on Wednesday, the Iranian top diplomat said Tehran never interferes in other countries’ internal affairs.
Noting that Iran and the US lacked official relations, the foreign minister said the important issue is that the next US president has to abide by the country’s commitments towards the nuclear deal.
He said the international community too, certainly expected the same from the United States.
During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump had threatened to tear up the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, including the US, calling it a “disastrous” agreement.
The Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei however reacted forcefully at the time saying that if the US “tears up the agreement, [Iran] will light it on fire.”
Iran nuclear deal, which took effect in January 2016, ended decades of economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program.
However, months into the JCPOA’s implementation, Iran complains that the promised economic benefits have yet to materialize, and that it still does not have access to global financial markets.
