ALWAGHT- US President Donald Trump plans to cut nearly $3 billion in previously allocated emergency budget funds, including $2.5 billion designated for foreign aid, Semafor reported, citing White House sources.
Trump plans to cut nearly $3 billion in emergency spending allocated under the 2023 debt ceiling legislation enacted by the Biden administration, according to reports. Of this, $2.5 billion was designated for foreign aid, including support for NGOs focused on migration and refugees, economic initiatives in Moldova and Georgia, and inclusivity projects. However, military assistance to allies, including Ukraine, will remain unaffected.
A government official stated that some foreign aid funding lacked proper scrutiny and was not well-planned. Despite the cuts, around $9.4 billion in emergency spending from the 2023 legislation will remain intact. The move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to reassess federal expenditures.
Following his inauguration on January 20, Trump’s administration launched a large-scale review of government spending. Elon Musk, leading the newly established US Department of Government Efficiency, has set a goal to cut $2 trillion in federal spending. Meanwhile, the US national debt has surpassed $36.5 trillion and is projected to exceed $50 trillion by 2034, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
