Alwaght- The US envoy to the Security Council has, again, vetoed a UN Security Council resolution drafted by Algeria on Tuesday that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, burying a new international effort that wants the Israeli genocide to end.
The resolution, which Algeria had been working on for three weeks, had demanded "an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that must be respected by all parties."
The vote came as Israeli regime prepares to invade into the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, where some 1.4 million displaced civilians take shelter.
The draft resolution had opposed the "forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population."
The US claimed that the draft resolution could put at jeopardy the ongoing talks for release of Israeli prisoners held by Hamas resistance movement.
Reactions to US leeway to Israeli genocide
Algerian Ambassador Amar Benjama said the draft calls for a ceasefire, but the Council has failed once again to rise to the calls and aspirations of the people of the world.
This failure does not absolve the Council of its mandate and the international community of its obligations, he said, adding: “It is high time for the aggression to end and for humanitarian assistance to reach all those in need across Gaza."
“All those impeding such calls should review their policies and calculations because wrong decisions today will have a cost on our region and our world tomorrow. This cost will be violence and instability," he went on.
Riyad H. Mansour, Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine, said the Algerian-led draft resolution was brought to the Council “precisely” because Israel persists with its onslaught “despite near unanimous” calls by the international community for a ceasefire.
Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said: “today, we have witnessed another black page in the history of the Security Council."
"It was again written by the US delegation," he continued, "which pursues the same goal – to cover up on behalf of its closest Middle Eastern ally and play for time so that it can complete its inhumane plans for Gaza, namely to squeeze the Palestinians out of the Strip and completely cleanse the enclave."
