ALWAGHT- Two military bases in Syria’s eastern provinces of Hasakah and Dayr al-Zawr, hosting US forces and allied militants, were hit by separate rocket attacks.
Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen TV, citing local sources, reported that several projectiles hit near a US military facility in al-Shaddadi town, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Hasakah, on Tuesday. The attack occurred while US forces were conducting exercises in the southern al-Jibsa neighborhood of the town.
Additionally, a large explosion rocked the US military base at the al-Omar oil field in Dayr al-Zawr province, as a series of rockets struck the site. Local sources stated that US forces attempted to intercept the rockets with ground-based air defense systems, but were unsuccessful. A large plume of smoke was visible for miles.
No immediate reports were available on casualties or the extent of the damage.
In a separate incident, a US military convoy was forced to turn back in Syria’s central Homs province after being blocked by Syrian government soldiers. Troops stationed at a checkpoint near the village of Tal Dhahab prevented the passage of four US armored vehicles, forcing them to retreat. There were no reports of clashes or injuries.
As of February 2021, around 900 US troops remain in Syria, following comments in November 2019 by the head of US Central Command, who stated there was no "end date" to the US’s military involvement in the country.
