Alwaght- The US has sent an army vessel to the Eastern Mediterranean as it prepares to set up a temporary port for what Biden called providing "aid" to Gaza.
The ship, operated by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), set sail towards Gaza 36 hours after the US President Joe Biden said he directed the military to build a seaport on the Gaza coast for the so-called aids to the Gazans who have been under bombardment and starvation of the US-backed Israeli regime for 5 months.
"Besson, a logistics support vessel, is carrying the first equipment to establish a temporary pier to deliver vital humanitarian supplies," CENTCOM said.
On Friday, the Pentagon said setting up the port could take up to 60 days.
A seaport really for aid?
An Iranian political export was asked about the real American intentions behind the pier plan. He said that if the American want to help Gaza people, they can push to end the war which is an easier way to help civilians than building a seaport.
"The Americans say they plan to deliver humanitarian aid through building a port. If they are concerned about human rights and want to help the Palestinian people, they can open the land routes that were used for years to transport food as today hundreds of trucks are waiting behind the borders," Fuad Izadi told ISNA news agency.
He further said now children are dying of malnutrition. Americans know it takes time to build a pier and ship food that way. In fact, Biden is under pressure from the public opinion of his country and the world and wants to say that we are concerned about human rights.
Izadi added that the US actually wants to monopolize and delay aid delivery to Gaza behind its project.
"Instead of helping, the Americans define a project and somehow send world public and Gaza to a wild goose chase while their action has a propaganda dimension and cooperation with the Israeli regime. The Israelis do not want the aid to reach the people of Gaza and are trying to take advantage of the hunger of the people. The US cooperates with the Israelis in this matter as well as in other fields," he held.
He added that if the crossings in Gaza are under the control of the Israelis who do not allow aids in, the coast of Gaza is also under the the same sraeli control. So, there must a dark side for this project.
He added: "If Americans are concerned about human rights, they should stop sending bombs. Twice, the US State Department has officially announced that they have bypassed the usual methods of sending weapons that require congressional authorization and have sent thousands of tons of bombs without congressional authorization. In fact, they want the people of this area not to survive but to be killed by these bombs."
Also, Michael Fakhri, the United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food, dismissed the measure as "absurd" and "cynical."
"No-one has asked for a maritime pier -- not the Palestinian people, not the humanitarian aid community," he told a briefing in Geneva.
"Neither a pier, nor the increasing airdrops over Gaza would "prevent starvation and famine by any definition", Fakhri said.
That Israel's main ally is resorting to such a measure "is absurd in a dark, cynical way", he said.
He suggested the move was likely "a performance to try to meet a domestic audience, with elections around the corner."
