Alwaght-A large number of protesters in Bahrain have staged an anti-regime rally to demand the release of imprisoned political activists as leading activists urges reconciliation during Eid ul Fitr celebrations.
Bahrainis took to the streets of the northwestern village of Diraz after Friday prayers, holding the pictures of jailed pro-democracy activists and chanting slogans against the Al Khalifa regime.
Similar demonstrations were also held in villages around the capital Manama.
Several anti-regime demonstrators were also injured after Bahraini security forces attacked the peaceful protests.
The angry demonstrators also called on the Bahraini regime to immediately free prominent opposition leader Sheikh Ali Slaman. Salman, the secretary general of Bahrain’s main opposition bloc, al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, was given a four-year sentence in mid-June over charges of inciting disobedience and hatred.
The demonstrations come as UN human rights experts have urged Manama regime to drop all charges against prominent rights defender Nabeel Rajab following his release for health reasons.
The president of Bahrain Center for Human Rights, Nabeel Rajab, said that he considers the decision to release him to be a "step he appreciates", hoping that it would be followed by another decision that "contributes to making a positive atmosphere for the families of prisoners and detainees and be a beginning of a new stage."
Rajab also hoped that "this Eid will be a beginning to a new stage and era embodied by reconciliation and overcoming the sorrows of the past."
