ALWAGHT- China has stated its "strong opposition" to the United States' approval of new military aid for Taiwan, warning that the action "severely breaches" the one-China principle and poses a threat to its sovereignty and security interests.
On Saturday, President Joe Biden approved a $571 million military aid package for Taiwan, along with the sale of additional arms worth $295 million to the self-governed island.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the decision on Sunday, calling it a “severe violation” of US commitments not to support Taiwan’s independence. The ministry warned that the move sends “a gravely wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed strong opposition and announced that Beijing had lodged formal protests with Washington. They emphasized that the Taiwan issue is central to China’s core interests and constitutes the “first red line” in US-China relations. The spokesperson urged the US to stop arming Taiwan and halt actions that threaten peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, vowing that China would take necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
While the US does not maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, it remains the island’s largest arms supplier and strategic ally. Beijing, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, has consistently urged Washington to cease military support and assistance, citing increased political and military tensions in recent years.
