ALWAGHT- Barcelona’s city council voted Friday to break institutional relations with the Israeli regime amid the Gaza massacres.
On Friday, Barcelona’s city council voted to sever institutional relations with the Israeli government and suspend its friendship agreement with Tel Aviv until international law is respected and Palestinian rights are guaranteed. The decision, supported by the ruling Socialist Party and several left-wing and pro-independence groups, also includes measures like urging the Barcelona trade fair to bar Israeli government pavilions and companies linked to oppression in Palestine.
Barcelona’s Socialist mayor, Jaume Collboni, cited the ongoing suffering and deaths in Gaza as reasons why maintaining ties with Tel Aviv is no longer sustainable. The city council also recommended that the Port of Barcelona avoid receiving ships involved in transporting arms to Israel, reflecting a growing local stance against complicity in the conflict.
This is not the first time Barcelona has taken such actions; in early 2023, former mayor Ada Colau similarly suspended relations with Israel. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on the EU to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel and impose an arms embargo, condemning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and urging a halt to the war and the delivery of urgent aid.
