"Loose Domestically and Strict Abroad" American Human Rights

Wednesday 10 December 2014
"Loose Domestically and Strict Abroad" American Human Rights

Alwaght-Ahead of the expected release of Senate "torture" report, China accuses America of showing “disregard” for human rights, the Telegraph reports.

The grand jury's decision not to indict the police officer involved in the death of Eric Garner raised concerns about human rights and lead to protests across America.

China has accused  America of having double standards on human rights, ahead of the release of a controversial Senate report on the CIA’s use of torture in the years following the September 11 attacks.

The 480-page America's Senate intelligence committee report is due to be released on Tuesday and is expected to lay bare how the CIA used “enhanced interrogation techniques” such as waterboarding in an attempt to obtain intelligence from terror suspects.

Even before its release Xinhua, China’s official news agency, published a lengthy editorial detailing what it said were America's human rights failings.

The American behaviour at home and abroad – including “attacks on foreign soil in its anti-terror campaigns” had "drawn international concern,” Xinhua noted.

"America is neither a suitable role model nor a qualified judge on human rights issues in other countries, as it pertains to be,” the Beijing-run outlet added. “Yet, despite this, people rarely hear the America talking about its own problems, preferring to be vocal on the issues, it sees in other countries, including China.”

Speaking last week, Barack Obama expressed concerns about how the increasing domestic clout of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, might impact on human rights.

“He has consolidated power faster and more comprehensively than probably anybody since Deng Xiaoping,” Mr Obama said of president Xi, who came to power in late 2012.

"[But] there are dangers in that. On issues of human rights, on issues of clamping down on dissent,” added Obama.

Beijing did not immediately react to those comments, but on Tuesday Xinhua accused Washington of using human rights issues to unfairly attack its political adversaries.

"China is open to dialogues and exchanges with other countries over its human rights issues and welcomes friendly advice and suggestions," the state-run agency said.

"However, should a country adopt double standards, being "loose" domestically and "strict" abroad, its contrasting principles could be taken as a disregard for human rights. What America appears to be doing is defending its own national interests and wielding human rights issues as a political tool."
