Erdogan as a President

Saturday 16 August 2014
Erdogan as a President

Alwaght-In 100th anniversary of the secular republic of Turkey, Erdogan stated his own plan for this secular republic until 2023. In the anniversary ceremony, he expressed that his country should be among first five top countries in EU and first ten top countries in the world until 2023 according to his own plan. By saying so, he wanted to illustrate his own long-term plan for seizing political power in order to inform his opponents that he will not quit political power in Turkey very soon.

In the first direct presidential election of Turkey, Erdogan has hailed his victory; he is now the first democratic president in Turkey, selected by the direct vote of Turkey people. According to his power in and plan for Turkey, his presidency may have following six domestic and international consequences:

1.      Seizing power: Erdogan as president wants to have more executive authorities rather than prime minister's one. He intends to modify the constitutional law of Turkey, according to this objective. Based on the political structure of this secular republic, presidency is a formalist position in Turkey. According to Erdogan, president should have more authorities rather than prime minister. He added that a powerful president could be more useful and helpful for Turkey. By fulfilling so, the executive power of parliament will be taken and then completely will be given to the president.

2.      Suppressing opposition:  due to his character, Erdogan does not put up with the opposition. Accordingly, the suppression of the opposition is a strong possibility in his presidency.

3.      Putting Pressure on Gulen movement: due to the basic differences between Gulen and Erdogan, it is expected that Erdogan as president continue to hinder the members of the Gulen movement in state organizations and institutions in order to put a high pressure on this movement. Accordingly, Erdogan has hindered the media, related to Gulen movement. Moreover, members of Gulen movement have been banned to take part in the main commercial and economic projects in Turkey.

4.      Considering Kurds as Winning Card: although Erdogan seems determined to achieve an agreement with the Kurds or PKK in Turkey, this is in fact a winning card for Erdogan against his opponents in order to reach at his political objectives. Therefore, there is fairly no hope to see a happy ending for Kurdish challenge in Turkey.

5.      Intensifying Narcissistic Personality Disorder: It seems that Erdogan has a Narcissistic Personality Disorder, because he wants to play a significant and permanent role in politics of Turkey based on his understandings and Illusions. According to his plan, he wants to turn Turkey into a superpower in the region and world until 2023. By doing so, he intends to be a more impressive man rather than Ataturk.

6.      Fossilizing Illusion in Foreign Policy of Turkey: The foreign policy of Turkey, based on Davoud Oghlu's strategic theories known as Neo-Ottamanism, seems contradictory in many cases. On the one hand, they claim fighting against terrorism, on the other hand, they spared no effort to support terrorists in Syria and Iraq and that is an outcome of thoughts of Neo-Ottamanism. This support for terrorism in the neighboring countries has made numerous security problems for Turkey and they will pay more in the future. However, surprisingly, it seems that Erdogan as the president has not quit this erroneous approach in foreign policy despite its severe consequences for Turkey.
