Iran Refuses US Zero-Enrichment Proposal, Warns Deal Could Fall Through

ALWAGHT- Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, firmly asserted that Tehran has no intention of ceasing its uranium enrichment, labeling US calls for a complete halt as unrealistic in the context of future nuclear discussions.

Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, reaffirmed that uranium enrichment remains a non-negotiable element of Tehran’s nuclear policy, calling it a red line in ongoing negotiations. He warned that no agreement would be possible if the US continues to demand a complete halt to Iran’s enrichment activities, emphasizing that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons and is open to confidence-building measures. Araghchi also reiterated that nuclear weapons have no place in Iran’s defense doctrine, despite the country’s technical capabilities.

Addressing regional tensions, Araghchi vowed a strong and immediate response to any Israeli aggression against Iran’s nuclear facilities, holding the US responsible for any such action due to its close ties with Israel. He also criticized European signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal for threatening to invoke the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions, warning that such steps would damage diplomatic relations and undermine the global non-proliferation regime.

Talks between Tehran and Washington, mediated by Oman, have seen little progress, with Iran citing inconsistent US positions and continued sanctions on its oil and nuclear sectors as major obstacles. Tehran has firmly rejected Washington’s demand for zero enrichment, maintaining that its program is peaceful and lawful. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei echoed this stance, calling the US position “utterly wrong” and expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of the ongoing indirect negotiations.
