Alwaght-Bahrainis have maintained protests against the Al Khalifa regime by holding fresh demonstrations across the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom.
On Friday Bahrainis turned out in large numbers to protest against the imprisonment of prominent opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.
Anti-regime protesters staged the rallies in the streets of the capital Manama and several other cities and villages across Bahrain to demand the release of all political detainees, including Salman, the secretary general of Bahrain’s main opposition bloc al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.
Al Khalifa regime forces attacked demonstrators in the village of Eker, south of Manama, and Sitra Island, southeast of the capital.
Tensions have been high in Bahrain since mid-June, when a Bahraini court sentenced 49-year-old Salman to four years in prison on a number of charges, including insulting the Interior Ministry and inciting others to break the law. He was acquitted of seeking regime change.
However, Salman, who was detained in December 2014, has strongly denied the charges, emphasizing that he has been seeking reforms in his country through peaceful means.
Despite the foreign-backed clampdown, the Bahraini regime is unable to stop the demonstrations that continue on an almost daily basis across the country.
Since mid-February 2011, Bahrainis have been holding demonstrating on the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa family to step down.
Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others wounded as a result of the ongoing violent crackdown on peaceful rallies in Bahrain.
