ALWAGHT- World leaders have vehemently condemned Israel’s decision to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), labeling the action as “unacceptable,” “illegal,” and akin to “collective punishment.”
The Palestinian presidency has condemned the Knesset's decision as indicative of Israel's descent into "a fascist state." Hamas also criticized the legislation, calling it an extension of "the Zionist war and aggression" against Palestinians. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres defended the operations of UNRWA, asserting that its work is "indispensable" and that there is "no alternative" to the agency.
International reactions have been largely negative, with China’s UN envoy denouncing the legislation as "outrageous" and Russia warning it would exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The UK expressed serious concerns about the potential hindrance to UNRWA's essential services, while Jordan labeled the move a "flagrant violation of international law." Several countries, including Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain, criticized the ban for setting a troubling precedent for multilateral organizations.
Australia has voiced opposition to the ban, underscoring the critical life-saving work performed by UNRWA. Meanwhile, Switzerland cautioned about the humanitarian, political, and legal consequences of restricting the agency's operations. Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib urged Israel to allow UNRWA to continue fulfilling its UN mandate, particularly in providing essential services across Gaza and surrounding regions.
The Israeli parliament approved the ban, introduced by members of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Likud party, which prevents UNRWA from operating in the occupied territories and prohibits Israeli officials from engaging with the agency. As Israeli military operations persist in Gaza, reports indicate the destruction of UNRWA facilities, including the Al Fakhoura school in the Jabalia refugee camp, amidst a rising death toll of at least 43,020 people and over 101,110 injuries since October 7, 2023.
