Alwaght- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-abdollahian says an Azerbaijani diplomatic delegation will be sent to Iran soon, more than a year after bilateral ties were strained after an attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran, reported IRNA.
Amir-abdollahian made the remarks while speaking with IRNA’s correspondent on the sidelines of a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah on Tuesday night.
“During the meeting with the foreign minister of Azerbaijan, we agreed that given the trial and indictment of the attacker on the Azerbaijani diplomat, necessary measures be taken soon regarding the sending of the diplomatic delegation of Azerbaijan to Tehran,” he said.
The Tehran-Baku relations were strained in January 2023, following a deadly attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran.
Azerbaijan closed its diplomatic mission in Iran after the incident, which it called a “terrorist act”, while a probe concluded that the assailant had been motivated by “personal and family-related problems.”
Talks about rapprochement started later last year. Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on December 24 that a roadmap has been prepared for the reopening of the Azerbaijani embassy in the Iranian capital of Tehran.
He made the remarks at a weekly press conference while elaborating on the outcomes of a videoconference between Iranian Prosecutor General Mohammad Kazem Movahedi Azad and his Azerbaijani counterpart Kamran Aliyev held on Saturday.
Kanaani said the meeting was part of the two countries' efforts and initiatives to resolve the remaining issues in the bilateral ties as well as the reopening of the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran.
He expressed hope that the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran would reopen and resume its operations at the earliest possible time.
On December 28, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said on December 28 that the embassy will be reopened once justice is served.
"Iran's law enforcement agencies have undertaken specific tasks regarding this case, and Iran has informed us about the trial start date. Our expectations are linked to the conduct of that trial and its results. Depending on the court process and its results, a subsequent decision will be taken. If the issues I mentioned are positively resolved, it will be possible to restore the activity of our embassy in Iran," the minister held.
