He was born on August 25, 1934 in the village of Bahreman near the city of Rafsanjan in Kerman Province. He later moved to Qom in 1948 to study Islamic theology in the city of Qom where he got acquainted Imam Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This persecution did not deter a resolute Rafsanjani who continued to play a crucial role in the events leading to the triumph of the Islamic Revolution. After the victory of the Revolution he continued to be a confidant of Imam Khomeini and became one of the members of Council of Islamic Revolution. He was also an interim commander-in-chief of the armed forces during the eight years of Iraq’s imposed war on Iran (1980-88). Among the other positions he held include parliament speaker (1980-1988), president (two terms from 1989-to-1997), and chairman of the Expediency Council (1998-till his death). He was also the head of the Assembly of Experts from 2007 until 2011 and interim Friday prayer leader of Tehran from 1981 to 2009.
