Iran Leader Sends Condolences over Death of ’Old Friend’ Rafsanjani

Alwaght- Former Iranian President and Chairman of the country’s Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died after suffering heart attack, one of family relatives confirmed on Sunday.

Rafsanjani was transferred to Shohadaie Tajrish hospital in Iranian capital of Tehran after a complete heart failure.

Medicals in the hospital tried for over an hour and a half to revive him but failed to do so and he was confirmed dead two hours later.

Mr. Rafsanjani had a very close and friendly relations with the Iranian supreme leader. He always insisted on this closeness of views both on national and international level.

Hashemi Rafsanjani was the fourth president of Iran. He served as president from 1989 to 1997. Rafsanjani was elected chairman of the Iranian parliament in 1980 and served until 1989.

He was the head of the Assembly of Experts from 2007 until 2011. He was also head of Iran's Expediency Council ever since 1987.

During the Iran–Iraq War Rafsanjani was the de facto commander-in-chief of the Iranian Armed forces.
