Alwaght- A former soldier of US army opened fire at people at the Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida, and killed five people on Friday.
The veteran who had fought the war against Iraq, also injured eight other people. The injured were transported to a hospital, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter.
The man was identified as Esteban Santiago, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. Santiago flew into Florida on a flight from Alaska via Minnesota on a Delta flight, officials said. He had declared his handgun in a firearms carrying case, law enforcement sources said.
Upon arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, he picked up the carrying case at baggage claim, took out the gun and started firing, according to law enforcement sources.
The killer who is said to be acting alone, suffered from psychological problems and had complained that the US administration was controlling his mind, authorities said.
Esteban Santiago, a 26 year-old resident of Anchorage, Alaska, was taken into custody immediately following the shooting and questioned at length, according to officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The FBI is investigating every angle and has not ruled out terrorism, according to officials. Santiago is in federal custody and will likely appear Monday in court in Broward County, officials said.
