ALWAGHT- Iranian and Russian naval forces will hold a joint exercise on Thursday in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean aimed at boosting maritime security and strengthening bilateral military cooperation.
The joint Iran–Russia naval drill will be hosted by Iran’s First Naval Region at the southern port of Bandar Abbas, where a Russian helicopter carrier has already docked as part of expanding maritime cooperation.
According to exercise spokesperson Hassan Maqsoudlou, the drill aims to enhance maritime security and promote sustainable naval interaction in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean through closer coordination and joint operational planning.
He said the exercise will focus on protecting commercial shipping and oil tankers, countering maritime terrorism, and strengthening regional cooperation, emphasizing the role of neighboring states in ensuring safe navigation.
Russian flotilla commander Alexey Sergeev welcomed the cooperation and signaled readiness for further joint drills, as the exercise unfolds amid rising tensions with the United States, following renewed threats by President Donald Trump and Iran’s warning that any military aggression would draw a decisive response.
