ALWAGHT- While hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order reinstating ‘maximum pressure’ on Iran.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order reinstating the "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran, a policy he had previously implemented during his first term. While signing the order in the Oval Office, shortly before meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump claimed he was hesitant about taking this step but ultimately decided to proceed, describing it as a tough measure against Iran. He also mentioned the possibility of negotiating a deal with Iran but emphasized the need for strength and firmness in US policy. The White House did not immediately release the details of the order.
During a joint news briefing with Netanyahu, Trump stated that his administration would enforce the "most aggressive possible sanctions" to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero and weaken Iran's ability to fund resistance movements. Iran has long supported groups opposing US military presence in West Asia and Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. Netanyahu, appearing upbeat, praised Trump as Israel’s "greatest friend" and highlighted the pro-Israel policies of his administration, including the withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.
In a controversial remark, Trump proposed that the US should take control of the Gaza Strip and permanently remove its Palestinian population. He suggested transforming Gaza into the "Riviera of the Middle East," indicating a plan to clear the area and rebuild it under US management. This statement aligns with longstanding US-Israeli cooperation but also reflects an extreme stance on the Palestinian issue, raising concerns about potential further displacement of Palestinian communities.
