Israel Strikes Southern Lebanese Town Amid Ceasefire

ALWAGHT- The Israeli military persists in attacking Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreement with the Hezbollah resistance movement, targeting residential buildings in the southern region.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported on Monday that Israeli forces fired machine guns at residential homes in the town of Naqoura, located along the border with the occupied territories.

This marks another breach of the ceasefire agreement that came into effect last week. Israel was compelled to accept the truce with Hezbollah after suffering significant losses during nearly 14 months of fighting, failing to achieve its objectives in Lebanon. The ceasefire, which began before dawn on Wednesday, is set to last 60 days with the aim of achieving a permanent cessation of hostilities.

Under the terms of the agreement, an international monitoring committee led by the United States is responsible for overseeing the truce's implementation. France, a member of the monitoring group, reported on Sunday that Israel had violated the ceasefire 52 times, including a Saturday attack that claimed the lives of three Lebanese civilians. French officials noted that Israel conducted its attacks without consulting the truce committee, warning that such actions jeopardize the fragile peace.

Israeli officials, however, claimed the monitoring body would not be fully operational until Monday or Tuesday. According to the World Bank, Israeli raids on Lebanon have killed nearly 4,000 people, displaced over a million, and caused over $8.5 billion in damages. Meanwhile, Hezbollah, having opened a support front for Palestinians in Gaza during Israel’s October 2023 assault on the besieged territory, has launched numerous retaliatory strikes against Israeli targets in the occupied territories.
