ALWAGHT- The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a resolution, urging the Security Council to reconsider Palestine's bid for full membership in the UN.
The resolution was adopted during an emergency session of the assembly held on Friday.
A total of 143 countries voted in favor of enhancing Palestine's status within the international organization, while nine opposed, and 25 abstained.
Currently designated as a UN non-member observer state since 2012, Palestine's aspiration to attain full UN membership requires approval from the Council and subsequent endorsement by at least two-thirds of the General Assembly.
The United States, the firmest ally of the Israeli regime, has consistently obstructed Palestinian efforts for full recognition by utilizing its veto power against relevant resolutions.
Recently, it utilized its veto authority during a Security Council vote on the matter on April 18.
Nevertheless, Washington lacks the same authority in the assembly.
The resolution adopted on Friday also conferred new "rights and privileges" upon Palestine, affirming its eligibility for full membership in the UN.
Its approval coincided with the genocidal war waged by the Israeli regime against the Gaza Strip from October 7 to the present, fostering greater sympathy for Palestinians and intensifying global demands for recognizing the State of Palestine.
