ALWAGHT- Protests continue to surge across Seoul as South Koreans demand President Yoon Suk Yeol’s resignation after his imposition and subsequent lifting of martial law.
Protesters gathered at Gwanghwamun Square and outside the National Assembly, holding placards with messages such as “Restore Democracy” and “Investigate His Act of Rebellion Now.”
Opposition lawmakers joined the rallies, intensifying calls for President Yoon Suk Yeol to resign. They also demanded his impeachment, with opposition parties pushing a bill to suspend him.
President Yoon declared martial law late Tuesday, pledging to eliminate “anti-state” forces amid tensions with an opposition-controlled parliament, which he accused of sympathizing with communist North Korea.
Within three hours, parliament voted to overturn the declaration. National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik dismissed the martial law as “invalid,” vowing that lawmakers “will protect democracy alongside the people.”
Yoon’s unexpected move evoked memories of South Korea’s authoritarian era of the 1980s and drew immediate condemnation from the opposition and even the leader of his own party.
