Top Iranian General Urges Peaceful Solution to Armenia-Azerbaijan Dispute

Alwaght- Top Iranian commander Major General Mohammad Baqeri said the ongoing dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region should be settled through peaceful channels.

Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces made the remark in a Monday phone call with Azerbaijan's Minister of Defense Colonel General Zakir Hasanov amid continued flare-up in hostilities leading to casualties on both sides.

Baqeri and Hasanov discussed the latest developments on the dispute and stressed the importance of easing tensions through dialogue.

The Azerbaijani minister, for his part, said Baku and Yerevan enjoy great capacities to solve their problems through negotiations and cordial relations.

Hasanov added that Azerbaijan has no intention to carry out a military operation to occupy Armenia's territory.

The recent weeks have witnessed resumption of deadly clashes between the two sides over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Around 200 forces were killed on both sides in border clashes last month, which ended with a ceasefire, but the situation remains tense around the common border.

Each side has blamed the other for eruption of the clashes.

This was the most recent flare-up in tensions between the two Caucasus neighbors since the two countries fought a war over the contested region in late 2020 that killed thousands of people in little more than six weeks.

The ex-Soviet countries have been locked in a decades-old conflict over the region, which is internationally recognized to be part of Azerbaijan, but has a primarily Armenian population that has resisted Azerbaijani rule since a separatist war that ended in 1994.
