Three Reasons Why Kurdistan Independence Can Stir Civil War

Alwaght- The United Nations denounced Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR) leader's bid to hold an independence referendum in Iraq as the West Asian country is fighting ISIS terrorist group.

UN issued a statement on Sunday saying, General Secretary Antonio Guterres “Believes that any unilateral decision to hold a referendum at this time would detract from the need to defeat ISIS".

The statement released by spokesman Stephane Dujarric also stresses that Guterres the potential referendum will sabotage "The much-needed reconstruction of the regained territories and the facilitation of a safe, voluntary and dignified return of the more than three million refugees and internally displaced people”.

Despite waves of domestic, regional and international objections to IKR independence from Iraq, the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region's president Maoud Barzani insists that they will hold referendum on 25 September.

The UN has also officially joined the party's opposing the war-torn country's partition as the international body's statement reads “The Secretary-General respects the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Iraq and considers that all outstanding issues between the federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government should be resolved through structured dialogue and constructive compromise".

Analysts argue that if the Kurds announce independence, a war is inevitable, in which in one side stand the Kurds alone and in the other side stand the Iraqi army and very likely a coalition of popular forces who are now busy combating the ISIS terrorist group in the country. Such a war is hard to escape if the Kurdish leaders continue to press forward with independence bid.
