Putin, Erdogan Talking on Phone after Ankara’s Alleged Apology

Putin, Erdogan Talking on Phone after Ankara’s Alleged Apology

Alwaght- Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, are currently speaking over the phone, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

On Monday, the Kremlin announced that Erdogan had sent a letter regarding the incident with the Russian plane, saying "Excuse us" and pledging to take any steps to "relieve the pain and severity of damage" caused to the family of the pilot killed during the incident.

"Putin's phone call is underway," Peskov told reporters, according to Sputnik news agency.

On November 24, 2015, a Turkish F-16 fired an air-to-air missile, slamming into a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 bomber at the altitude of 6,000 meters and roughly one kilometer from Turkey’s border. Later, the Russian Defense Ministry specified the Su-24 was downed when it was returning to the Hmeymim airbase in Syria.

Following the incident, Moscow imposed a number of restrictive measures on Turkey and has repeatedly said that Ankara should apologize for downing the plane and cover any material losses to the country and the pilot's family.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that the outcome of talks between the Turkish and Russian leaders would be the only reliable source of information regarding whether or not Turkey will pay Russia a compensation for its downed Su-24 jet.

"There have been many statements. I will ask you to rely solely on the outcome of the two leaders' talks here," Peskov told reporters, answering a question on recent statements by Turkey's prime minister that Ankara would offer no compensation despite expressing regret over downing the Russian warplane
