Alwaght- Pro-government popular forces in Syria are expected in Afrin to support locals in the northern Syrian city facing the aggression launched by the Turkish army on the area.
According to sources, the arrival of popular forces will strengthen the locals’ resilience and resistance against the Turkish aggression which targets infrastructure, public and private properties, and economic and services establishments.
Turkey has been waging an illegal offensive on Afrin area for almost a month, using various types of weapons and shells, killing and injuring hundreds of people and destroying infrastructure, properties, and historical landmarks.
Turkey has been waging “Operation Olive Branch” against Syria’s Afrin region since January 20 in a bid to eliminate the US-backed People's Protection Units (YPG), which forms the backbone of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish militant group, which Ankara views as a terror organization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The latter has been fighting for an autonomous region inside Turkey since 1984.
The Syrian government has condemned the “brutal Turkish aggression” against Afrin, rejecting Ankara’s claim about having informed Damascus of the operation. The Syrian government has also slammed the illegal US military presence in the country.
