ALWAGHT- Yemen resumes military operations against Israeli vessels in strategic waters after Israel's deadline to reopen Gaza crossings and allow aid expires.
The Yemeni Armed Forces announced the resumption of military strikes on Israeli vessels following a directive from Ansarullah leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. The decision came after Israel failed to meet a four-day deadline to reopen Gaza’s crossings, which had been shut to pressure Hamas into releasing captives. The closure also exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has suffered over 15 months of war.
In response, Yemen declared an immediate ban on Israeli ships navigating key maritime zones, including the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. The Yemeni military warned that any Israeli vessel attempting to breach the ban would be targeted. The restriction will remain in effect until the Gaza crossings are reopened and humanitarian aid is allowed in.
Yemeni officials reaffirmed their unwavering support for Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. They had previously warned they were prepared to resume attacks if aid was blocked. Since October 7, 2023, Yemen has targeted Israeli-linked ships with missile and drone strikes, significantly impacting Israel’s economy and driving up prices for its settlers.
